Bound in three-quarter red leather and pebbled dark green cloth boards, with gilt-paneled spine with no titling. Boards show light rubbing to binding with cracking to hinges, and reinforcement to both front and rear gutters. Text blocks shows light to moderate foxing, light finger wear and smudging, and some fraying to fore-edges, damage to page 336 (appears to have been pasted to the next page.) See all pictures. Provenance: "Presented to Mary Rex by her father Levi Rex September 10, 1898" inscribed to front free endpaper. The memoir of Solomon Northup. A free-born African American, he was drugged and kidnapped in Washington, D.C. before being transported to New Orleans and sold into enslavement. Published during the first year of his regained freedom, the narrative was hugely popular. The first edition was reprinted several times with three additional editions by 1859.
