The memoirs of Philibert de Gramont, a French courtier and soldier of the seventeenth century, written by his brother-in-law, Antoine Hamilton. Philibert was the younger half-brother of Antoine III of Gramont. He was exiled from Louis XIV's court in 1662 for courting one of his mistresses, Anne-Lucie de la Mothe-Houdancourt. Upon this exile, Philibert found home at the court of Charles II in England, though he was allowed to return to France after a couple of years. When Philibert was 80, he supplied his brother-in-law, Antoine, with the material for these 'Memoirs'. Hamilton provided interesting passages in this volume on the history of the court of Charles II. Antoine Hamilton, also known as Anthony, was a soldier who fought in the Franco-Dutch War. Philibert married his sister, Elizabeth, who was known as one of the Windsor Beauties painted by Sir Peter Lely. With woodcut headpieces and decorative initials. Collated, complete. Bookplate and ink inscription of Thomas Carill Worsley to the front paste down. Worsley was a businessman, with interests in lead mining, who lived at Platt Hall, Manchester. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
