Bowyer, London, 1723, First Edition, 427 pp, full leather, 8.25 x 5.25”, 8vo. In good condition. Spine has been glazed (previous restoration). Boards are dry, rubbed. Scuffing to edges. Six compartment spine in beautiful condition. Gilt work is slightly rubbed, but present. Red morocco spine label. Front hinges are lightly cracked. Bookplates of previous owner on front paste down and rear fly-leaf. Worm trails to several leaves, text remains unimpeded. Light toning and foxing, as to be expected. Overall, a nice copy! Please see photos. Armorial bookplate— owned by son of Captain in Cromwell’s Army. Lloyd family of Aston Hall in Wales “Robert Lloyd was the first of his family to live at Aston in the lordship of Oswestry, Shropshire. He was the son of Robert Lloyd of Park Promise, and Gwenhwyfar his wife, daughter of William Edwards of Plas Newydd, Constable of Chirk Castle, and one of Henry VII’s bodyguard. His son, Andrew Lloyd, was a captain in Oliver Cromwell’s army. Andrew’s son, Thomas Lloyd, married Sarah, daughter of the co-heir of Francis Albany, a London merchant and owner of the lordship Whittington. Thomas was succeeded by his son Robert Lloyd.” First edition... Life of the great general and general-at-sea whose career flourished under two monarchs, the Commonwealth, and the Protectorate. “Skinner is thought to have been the physician to the Duke of Albemarle, when residing at New Hall in Essex.” This is his best known work. George Monk, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670) was an English soldier and politician, and a key figure on both sides of the English Civil War, as well as the Restoration of the monarchy of King Charles II in 1660.
