ESTC No. N5220. This Dublin imprint was printed the same year as the London edition. With a frontispiece and a further seven plates to volume I. Lacking the 'Mr Prior' and 'Countess of Chesterfield' plates according to the binder's instructions. There are two plates that are not mentioned to the binder's instructions, 'Alderman George Faulkner' and a plate that faces the 'end of the memoirs' which features an urn and a crying cherub. This work comprises of letters from Stanhope to his friends as well as further memoirs of Stanhope's life. The memoir on the Earl of Chesterfield is by Matthew Maty, who began the work with the assistance of Solomon Dayrolles. The work was completed by his son-in-law Justamond. These miscellaneous works are the first appearance of Maty's memoir. CONDITION In half calf bindings. Externally, rubbed. Front board to volume II is detached but present. Front hinge and joint to volume I are weak and held by one cord only; may detach with further handling. Front hinge and joint to volume III are weak and may detach with further handling. Split to the spine of volume II. Split to the spine of volume I has resulted in the binding being tender. The binding may split in half at page 150-151 with further handling, as it is held by one cord only. Otherwise, all volumes are generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spots to pages. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
