I shall therefore think it superfluous to apologize for writing the life of a man who, by an uncommon assemblage of private virtues, adorned the highest eminence in a public possession.", has been attributed to Samuel Johnson. In the prefatory Advertisement Davies acknowledges that Johnson encouraged him to undertake the work and supplied him with much of the information regarding Garrick's early life (Garrick was Johnson's first pupil at Edial).
