Extra-Illustrated and Bound By Pfister. London, England: Printed for J. Walter, Charing-Cross, 1783. xi + 232 pages. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Henry Chichele by Harding, dated 1792; also, a Part of All Souls inner Quadrangle &c. by J. Fisher; Highham Ferrers church and free-school Northamptonshire; a View of the Arch-Bishop's Palace & St. Mary's Church Lambeth; the Hall of Lambeth Palace, now the Library by Billings, published by Pickering in 1834 and St. Mary, Lambeth by Higham after Shepherd published by Jones & Co. 1831. Henry Chichele (c. 1362 - 1443) English Administrator and archbishop of Canterbury "...His care extended to the provision of fellowships at his foundation of All Souls College for the founder's kin, though only a few took up the privilege in the fifteenth century...His success made it inevitable that he should be drawn into the service of the English government...Chichele was the third archbishop of Canterbury in succession to take an active role in the leadership of what was effectively an autonomous national church. His first principle was close co-ordination with royal policy, and he continued to be an active member of the council...His long career imparted a cool professionalism to the service of crown and church." (Jeremy Catto in the ODNB) The binding's cover is gilt titled "Seth Minot Millikin Founder's Kin to All Souls College." Approx. 5 1/2" x 9 1/8" size; bound in full polished dark brown morocco leather covered boards; gilt spine titles & band-decorations, marbled endpapers, gilt roll-tool turn-ins; binder's stamp of Pfister on the front endpaper edge. Some edge, tips wear and rubbing to the covers, half-title leaf top corner chipped a bit; a few marginal pencil line-marks, usually marking discussion of the Pynchon family; text block in very good condition.
