Complete in five volumes, this is a 'New Edition' of this work. Translated into English from the original French. Maximilien de Bethune was a nobleman and a soldier. He assisted King Henry IV in his rule of France and built a strong centralised administrative system in France. Sully left his memoirs behind, which were written in the second person. It is a useful and valuable contemporary history of the time. However, the memoir does contain a number of fictions. CONDITION In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Volume I has been rebacked with original boards preserved. Volumes II-V have repairs to the backstrips and joints preserving portions of original backstrips and boards. Externally, generally smart with heavy rubbing to the spine, joints and extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spines due to the rubbing. Front hinge and joint to volume I is tender. Front hinge and joint to volume II is weak and with further handling may detach. Rear hinge to volume II is tender. Both hinges to volume III are tender. Rear hinge to volume IV is weak. Front hinge and joint to volume V are weak and may detach with further handling. Front endpaper is loosening to the same volume. Rear hinge to volume V is also weak and may detach with further handling. Prior owner's pencil inscriptions to endpapers of volumes I-V. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are age toned. Spotting to endpapers and some offsetting at page edges. Instances of light scattered spots throughout all volumes. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much, Katherine, for a truly pluperfect transaction.
