Complete in nine volumes. The author's presentation copy, inscribed 'With the best wishes of the author. Sam - Will - Ryley' dated Aug 6th 1830. Written by English actor and author, Samuel William Ryley, who spent a large amount of his life performing with various acting companies all over Britain. Ryley lived an exciting and varied life, spending time as a 'wandering' actor with his own act, before moving up to Scotland with the Stephen Kemble company. In this work, Samuel William Ryley presents a fictional autobiography, a wild and and fantastic tale in the style of 'Tristram Shandy'. Ryley purports the work to be in some respects autobiographical. This collection is comprised of the following: The first series of 'The Itinerant, or Memoirs of an Actor', the second edition published in 1817, complete in three volumes. The first edition of this first series was published in 1808. The second series of 'The Itinerant, or Memoirs of an Actor', the first edition published in 1816-7, complete in three volumes. With a frontispiece of the author in his later years. The third series, entitled 'The Itinerant, in Scotland', the first edition, published in 1827. This series in particular is very scarce to see. With the bookplate of James Lovatt. CONDITION Uniformly bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, worn. Both boards detached to volume I, II and VI. Front board detached to volume III, V, VII and VIII, with front endpaper also detached to VIII. Boards tenderly held, joints cracked and boards may detach with further handling to volume IV, V, VII, VIII and IX. Rubbing to boards and leather. Slight loss to the spines to most volume, with the occasional backstrip lifting. Lacking spine label to VI. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with handling marks. Tide mark to most volumes, heavier to the lower half of pages to volume II, VIII and IX. Author's ink inscription to the half title of VII. Overall Condition: Good Only GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good.
