Description

Night Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality; to Which is Added Paraphrase on part of the Book of Job and the Last Day Poem, Edward Young, LL.D, Published by Suttaby, Evance & Fox, London, 1823, 300 pp, plus index, original leather, 5.5 x 3.25”, 32mo. In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities. Leather desiccated, flaking and dry. Hinges quite rubbed. Spine desiccated as well with flaking and rubbing. Gilt finishing remains, but is quite rubbed. Gutters have been repaired with non-archival fabric tape. Marbled end papers soiled. “Miss Ellen Boyd from Theodore Dwight Jan. 1st 1827” on front flyleaf. His fifth daughter, Augusta Moore Dwight (b. 1840) signed it October 29th, 1858 on the second flyleaf. Interior toned and somewhat soiled. Scattered foxing throughout. Tissue guard to frontispiece is toned and soiled. Binding intact. Please see photos. Written in blank verse, Young’s poem describes the musings on death over a series of nine “nights” in which he ponders the loss of his wife and friends, and laments human frailties. Night-Thoughts had a very high reputation for many years after its publication, but is best known for a major series of illustrations by William Blake in 1797. Our edition does not contain said Blake illustrations. Owned by Theodore Dwight (1796-1866) and given to his wife-to-be, Eleanor Boyd. Dwight was the American author of The Northern Traveler. He tragically died in a train accident while traveling to Newark, New Jersey. This was a gift to their daughter Augusta Moore Dwight (b. 1840). COLL1823ABFZ-FORN-TUB0007 HK02/24

This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
