Born in 1769, Count Lavallette fought in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, eventually turning down an opportunity to go into exile with Napoleon and opting for execution instead. Most fascinatingly, he escaped prison the night before his execution by dressing as a woman. The second edition of this work. Handsomely bound in quarter morocco with refreshed endpapers. CONDITION Handsomely bound in quarter morocco with cloth covered boards and refreshed endpapers. Externally, lovely, with just minor shelf wear. Internally, hinges slightly strained, remaining binding is firm. A few scattered spots to the first and last few pages of each volume, and the odd instance of spotting throughout. A very small tidemark to the head of the page in Volume II from the title page to page 3. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
