Antoine Marie Chamans, comte de Lavalette (1769 – 1830) was a French politician & an aide-de-camp to Napoleon who met him in 1796. His memoirs tell of the various diplomatic missions that he was sent on during his time on duty with the Emperor. When Napoleon was sent into exile, Lavalette did not go, having a pregnant wife and young daughter. The night before he was to be executed, he escaped by switching clothes with his wife, impersonating her and escaping. There are several portraits of her, along with pictures of Napoleon and other dignitaries of the era. There are approximately 29-30 plates in volume II, part I with a good many being portraits while there are fewer in volume II, part II—about 15 or so—but this contains the exciting tale of his escape from prison while dressed in his wife’s clothes. This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
