Description

The Life and Times of Sir Thomas Gresham: Compiled Chiefly From His Correspondence Preserved in Her Majesty’s State-Paper Office by John William Burgon. 2 VOLUMES, COLLATED & COMPLETE, IN VERY GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION This is a fascinating biography of the 16th century merchant who founded The Royal Exchange, the center of commerce for the UK for finance, the exchanging of goods and services and later stocks. He was an important representative of Queen Elizabeth I. He is known for “Gresham’s Law” (bad money drives out good money). His ingenious financial acumen helped the Crown remain solvent during precarious times when quite the debt had been accumulated. Published in 1839 by Robert Jennings in London. First edition. Octavo, 8.75” x 6.” Fine binding: contemporary chocolate brown 3/4 morocco leather over marbled paper; covers with single fillets in gilt; spine with five raised gilded bands with gilt lettering and emblems. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with several chapter head and tail pieces and plates. Frontispiece of Sir Thomas Gresham in Volume I. Fold-out facsimile letter in Volume II. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: VERY GOOD Each volume is in Very Good or better antiquarian condition, particularly since the books are 185-years-old. Firmly bound with square bindings and firm hinges and joints. Moderate rubbing to leather (particularly the spines and corners) and shelf wear commensurate with age. Text block is generally quite clean and bright with mild age-toned pages, very little foxing (mostly on the endpapers and near plates, per usual). Some waviness and creasing to several pages. The infrequent smudge, small page tear or other sign of finger handling. Former owner bookplate/stamp on rear pastedown of each volume. Overall, a very good antique first edition - the highest grade on the market as of posting. Please see pictures as they are an important part of the condition description.
