With "Bible Stories for the Young." Circa 1840's (there is no date of publication stated); John Tallis and Company; London. Complete in 3 volumes. Each volume features dozens of wonderfully illustrated engraved plates with decorative borders. Three-quarter leather binding with marbled covers and gilt lettering and raised bands on the spine. From the introduction: "In this work will the young student of Christianity see its principles laid down by its heavenly Founder, and applied by him to every phase of human life; they will hear him warning the rich, comforting the suffering and poor, instructing the ignorant, encouraging the lowly, but startling the sinful and the hypocrite. They will listen to the simple and highly poetical parables, in which the Saviour clothed his merciful messages from the throne of love and power, and be softened by his affectionate gentleness; anon they will see him threatening the odburate sinners with the avenging lightnings of an offended Deity. They will trace him through every scene of his blessed mission; rejoice with him at the marriage feast at Canaan; weep with him at the grave of Lazarus; pray with him in the garden of Gethsemane; and shed tears, both of anguish and hope, when they read of his agonies, and patient endurance at Golgotha. To all, but especially to the young, do we earnestly recommend a careful perusal of this work, as calculated to plant and mature in their hearts a knowledge and love of good, and a spirit of enlightened and unaffected piety, which shall be a source of delight in prosperity, and of hope and consolation in adversity."
