Description
It is hard to remember Henry Lewes as anything other than the freethinking consort of George Eliot but he did have a career as a writer too. He was an active participant in the literary and intellectual circles of his day, and his wide-ranging research made him the perfect biographer for the German poet Goethe. This is a very nice first edition bound in leather and looking virtually unhandled. Very Good Condition: 4to, Leather Binding with marble endpapers (some damage to the front paper in volume two), decorated spine with raised bands with gilt floral embellishments between, title and author in gilt, gilt lines outlining front and back boards. Frontispiece portraits of Goethe in both; young Goethe in Volume I and an older Goethe in Volume II. Some minor discoloration to the leather from handling. “The Life and Works of Goethe: with Sketches of HIs Age and Contemporaries from Published and Unpublished Sources”. By G. H. Lewes. In two Volumes. London: David Nutt, 270, Strand. 1855. FIRST EDITION. COLL1855CJKA

This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
