Description
Found in the book were two items - one a second version of the frontispiece portrait, on thin paper not thick paper used for the engraved plate of the frontispiece, and the second a HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED BY "Wm H. Prescott". I cannot STATE WITH CERTAINTY THAT THIS IS AN AUTHENTIC LETTER AND NOT A FACSIMILE. This is what I observe: There are two sheets of thin paper, the two pages of the note, that are mounted on cardstock. They are not tipped in - they are glued/affixed. The sheet on the right overlaps the one on the left. I can feel the edge of the right side sheet overlapping the left. In case if it is informative, I've also provided a photo of the back of this cardstock - one can see the line separating the two sheets of the note. Here is what the note says, as best I can read: Red Rock, Lynn Aug. 10 Dear Sir, I congratulate you on your return, & that your expedition has been attended with such good results The other day I put the very question which you ask me of Lieut Derby's father, W. John B. Derby. But, strange today, he did not know him ...( not legible, maybe, "...and info on where he ...."). I have no other means of information. That was two months ago, however, Mr. John Derby may be ... in State Street, when he may be seen ...hours (???). Very Truly Yours, Wm H. Prescott Aug 11 I see in this mornings' Advertiser a piece by John Phoenix, from which it seems that he is at (?? Nantucket?). I doubt you have seen it." In any case, it is in very good condition and it will be separately stored in a plastic sleeve. The second image of Prescott will be stored in its own separate sleeve. The leather book is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. FULL LEATHER, 5 raised bands and clear gilt titling on the spine. There is wear where the boards meet the spine, but boards remain solidly attached. Corners have moderate wear, light edge wear. Gilt on three page edges. A nice bookplate behind front board. No interior marks in 491 clean and solidly bound pages. Engravings adorn chapter titles, and there are two plates in addition to the frontispiece, one of a bust of William Prescott and the other a facsimile of some writings of Prescott. Prescott is considered to be the first American scientific historian. His works included THE HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA THE CATHOLIC (1837), THE HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO (1843), and A HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF PERU (1847). B131
