Description
Very good condition hardcover book. This book is from the personal library of Lincoln MacVeagh, former US ambassador to Spain, Portugal, Greece, Yugoslavia, South Africa, and Iceland. He was also US Minister to Greece. Many of these appointments were during the sensitive times of WWII. Exterior: 3/4 leather binding is clean tight and square. Five raised bands on the spine. Leather spine and corners. Decorated paper on the boards. Gilt text and design on the spine. All page edges are marbled. Top page edges have dust soiling. Corner, bottom and free edge, and spine end wear. Some leather loss on the face of the top corners. About 8-3/4” tall. Interior: pages are clean with no tears or creasing. Pages have light margin toning. Lincoln and Margaret MacVeagh bookplate on front pastedown. Two blank pages after the front and back endpapers have very light foxing. Pencil handwriting top corner of the reverse of the front free endpaper. I counted nine pages in the Theseus chapter with pencil underlining and/or margin notes. No other handwriting found. 414 pages. This antique book is a true gem for any collector interested in ancient biographies and history. Published in 1872 by Little, Brown, and Company, this volume is the first part of Plutarch's Lives, featuring a leather binding and translated by John Dryden and revised by Arthur Hugh Clough in 1859. The book is written in English and has been well-preserved over the years, making it a great addition to any collection of antiquarian and collectible books. Its detailed illustrations and captivating narrative will transport readers back in time to the ancient world.
