With original letters and an account of his travels and of his principal works. Beautifully illustrated with tipped in lithographs, photographs, paintings and sketches "by the artist's own hand". Collated complete with seventeen plates and a vignette title page. Müller was born at Bristol, the son of J. S. Müller, a Prussian from Danzig, curator of the Bristol museum. He first studied painting under James Baker Pyne. His early pictures were mostly of the scenery of Gloucestershire and Wales, and he learnt much from his study of Claude, Ruysdael, and earlier landscape-painters. In 1833 he exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time, showing Destruction of Old London Bridge-Morning. Handsomely bound in a half crushed morocco binding, by H. Sotheran and Co. CONDITION In a smart half crushed morocco binding, with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, generally smart, with only some very light rubbing to the cloth covered boards. Previous owner's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, and binder's stamp to the verso of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound and bright throughout. Page are generally clean although with the odd spot and handling mark. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
