O riginal calf skin leather bindings measuring 9.5 x 6.5”, 8vos. Frontispieces, one depicting Grant as a younger man and the other in older age. One fold-out letter plate, multiple full-page maps and cartouche engravings. Complete. In fair condition. Original boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at edges with some chipped leather. Rear board of Vol. II detached from binding. Other hinges are cracked; boards attached via cording only. Head and tail of Vol. I’s spine lacking; headbands intact. Vol. I’s spine is chipped (at front hinge), with exposed binding, title and volume labels remain intact. Vol. II’s head and tail of spine scuffed, headbands intact. Scuffing and rubbing to leather binding; Vol. II’s front board exhibits red scuff mark. Edges of text-blocks marbled (dulled). Light toning throughout text-blocks, mostly at edges of leaves. Some off-setting around plates. Bindings of text-blocks intact, boards need reinforced/re-attached. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; 1822 – 1885) was the 18th president of the United States, serving from 1869 to 1877. In 1865, as commanding general, Grant led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War. First edition of both volumes with 49 maps and illustrations, including two steel engraved portraits and two etched views, all with tissue guards. An important historical memoir of the Civil War, arguably considered Grant’s magnum opus. General Norman Schwartzkopf called this the finest memoir of war experiences that has ever been penned.
