Description
ULTRA RARE AND VERY INTERESTING, AND NICELY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR FRANCIS W. GRENFELL TO HIS COUSIN ANNE E. GRENFELL, WHOSE BOOKPLATE ADORNS THE BOOK!! Privately published by the author in what I presume was a limited copy. There are no other copies available for sale online. 8vo. 152pp + 11 B&w plates. Vellum-covered boards with faded red titles. The boards show light edge and corner wear, have light soiling, and are slightly bowed outward. The book will be stored pressed against stiff cardboard using shrink wrap. Beautiful marble endpapers with, as noted, there is an attractive bookplate of Wilfred T. Grenfell and Anne E. Grenfell, and a second bookplate of the previous owner, a Gordon W. Thomas, M.D. Frontis plate is photograph of the Prior of Troitsa, subsequent plates are line drawings by the author (all present). Binding is very solid, pages are clean, with one small exception. There is a newspaper article on the death of the Grenfell, and a second piece of ephemera, found near the beginning of the book. It left a small stain - see listing photo. Both items are conveyed with the book. This is an account in letters to his wife of a voyage to Russia with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and other military dignitaries and their entourage for the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II, including Grenfell's secondhand account of the Khodynka Tragedy. On the author from Wikipedia: "Field Marshal Francis Wallace Grenfell, 1st Baron Grenfell, GCB, GCMG, PC (Ire) (29 April 1841 – 27 January 1925) was a British Army officer. After serving as aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief, South Africa, he fought in the 9th Xhosa War, the Anglo-Zulu War and then the Anglo-Egyptian War. He went on to become Sirdar (Commander-in-Chief) of the Egyptian Army and commanded the forces at the Battle of Suakin in December 1888 and at the Battle of Toski in August 1889 during the Mahdist War. After that he became Governor of Malta and then Commander-in-Chief, Ireland before retiring in 1908." The autograph has not been authenticated, but a few can be found online. One is available for sale on Abebooks as a cut autograph from a letter - it is shown in the last listing photo. As seen, the autographs and handwriting are very consistent. B130
