Description
" Near Sixty Years Pastor of the Churches of Buffalo and Alamance (Guilford County, NC) --Account of the Regulators, together with the Revolutionary Transactions and Incidents in which he was Concerned --- ". The author begins with a brief history of religion in North Carolina up to the time of the American Revolution. Reverend Caldwell (1725-1824) was a Presbyterian minister, educator, physician, statesman and early settler in then Guilford County in North Carolina in the 1750s. He was a staunch whig and supported the Regulators in their dispute with Governor Tryon in the late 1760s. This ended in the Battle of Alamance where Tryon defeated the Whigs. The Author provides significant details on the leaders of the Regulators and the aftermath of their defeat. Many of Caldwell's parishioners and students served in the Revolutionary forces during the War and the British and the Tories persecuted both Caldwell and his family. The British burned down his plantation in 1781 including his famed library. The author includes many details of military actions in Guilford County at that time. An excellent biography of Caldwell as well as a history of those times in Guilford County. Leather binding is tight, royal octavo, marbled end papers, 302pp, Howes b. Condition as noted above.
