Description

Easton Press leather edition of John Updike's "Self-Consciousness," a COLLECTOR'S edition, a First Edition, Personally signed by JOHN UPDIKE, published in 1989. Bound in hunter green leather, the book has camel tan French moire silk end leaves, a satin book marker, symth-sewn binding, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. John Hoyer Updike, who lived from 1932--2009, was an American novelist and short story writer. Updike's Memoirs consist of six Emersonian essays that trace the inner shape of his life from his childhood in Shillington, Pennsylvania up to the age of fifty-five. Updike says in the foreword that he is grateful to numerous Shillingtonians for corrections and additions of detail and his mother and cousin for facts about the Harley Updike family. Updike has been hair-raisingly honest, matchlessly precise, and self-effacingly humorous, taking the reader beyond self-consciousness, and beyond self-importance. Updike says his "veins have been tapped---the lode mined---in over thirty years' worth of prose and poetry. . .a life view by the living can only be provisional." Chapter two is titled: "At War with My Skin," in which Updike says he has been battling psoriasis after an attack of measles in 1938, recalling a few occasions when he was challenged in the brute world of childhood, about his skin. In Chapter 5, "A Letter to My Grandsons," Updike reminds them that "we are all of mixed blood. . .your father is black, the pure black of West Africa and your mother is English---with a dash of Russian, French, German and Dutch. I am a half, a Pennsylvania Dutchman." In the last chapter, Updike says he has been happy for thirty years in New England, from his HARVARD days as an English major to the present. "If I am nice and good, you'll leave me alone to read my comic books, as I love Mickey Mouse, Captain Marvel, and Plastic Man." 257 pages. I offer combined shipping.

Quite the surprised, at first I thought I ordered something from a pet shop because of the box turns out to be my order xD. My books were well packaged no noticeable box damage internally and externally. They were as described in the listing and shipped promptly in a 2 weeks window. Would recommend seller.
