William Frank Buckley Jr., who lived from 1925--2008, was an American public intellectual and conservative author and commentator. In 1955, Buckley founded National Review, a magazine that stimulated the conservative movement in the late-20th century United States. Buckley hosted 1,429 episodes of the public affairs television show FIRING LINE (1966–1999), the longest-running public affairs show in television history with a single host, where he became known for his transatlantic accent and wide vocabulary. Buckley wrote more than fifty other books on diverse topics, including writing, speaking, history, politics, and sailing. Buckley also penned a nationally syndicated newspaper column. Buckley referred to himself as either a libertarian or conservative. For an entire generation, he was the preeminent voice of American conservatism. In a prologue to "The Redhunter," a history professor and former McCarthy colleague named Harry Bontecou sits reading a newspaper in a London Club in 1991. Harry muses over similar carnages committed by Stalin, the Nazis, and the East Germans. Harry soon resolves to tell his version of the McCarthy years. After graduating from Columbia, Bontecou goes to work for McCarthy, only to find his own passionate pursuit of conservatism betrayed by the senator's penchant for half-cooked, extemporaneous accusation of treason, forcing Bontecou to distance himself from his mentor as the backlash grows. The depiction of McCarthy's upbringing on a Wisconsin chicken farm is affecting. In the Acknowledgements, Buckley wrote: "I knew Senator McCarthy and, with my brother-in-law, the late L. Brent Bozell, wrote a book about him. This book is a novel, but most of the events here recorded are true to life." Claiming to have proof that hundreds of individuals "loyal to the Communist Party" were working in the U.S. Government, McCarthy led post-war Anti Communist investigations for which he became a national celebrity. His influence came to an end when the Senate condemned him in 1954. McCarthy was a demagogue who ruined hundreds of lives. Buckley is "charming, witty, provocative, and eloquent." 421 pages, including an Index. I offer Combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
