Born in Texas but reared in Abilene, Kansas, Dwight Eisenhower, who lived from 1890-1969, described himself as a "Kansas farm boy." He possessed a razor-sharp mind and extraordinary organizational skills. Eisenhower was appointed to WEST POINT in 1911. At six feet tall, weighing 170 pounds, with strong, broad shoulders, and rock-hard muscles, he was the embodiment of a manly athlete. Ike married MAMIE DOUD in 1916. Eisenhower arrived in Manila with Douglas MacArthur to help build a Philippine defense force, but he admitted bitter disappointment with what he perceived as a dead-end assignment and a dislike for his superior. By 1939, Ike had requested a transfer back to the States. When Pearl Harbor set the American war machine in motion, Eisenhower got the opportunity he had been waiting for. "Crusade in Europe" is a book of wartime memoirs, originally published in 1948. The book recounts his appointment by General George Marshall to plan a defense of the Philippines and continues to describe his appointment to, and execution of the role of Supreme Allied Commander in Northern Europe. Ike was often frustrated with those in power. In the Allied Headquarters at Reims, Field Marshall Jodl signed the instrument of German surrender on May 7, 1945. At midnight of the next day there ended, in Europe, a conflict that had been raging since September 1, 1939. Between these two dates millions of Europeans had been killed. All Europe west of the Rhine had, with minor exceptions, lived for more than four years under the domination of an occupying army. Free institutions and free speech had disappeared. Economics were broken and industry prostrated. In Germany, her bridges were down, her cities in ruins, and her great industrial capacity practically paralyzed. Great Britain had exhausted herself economically and financially to carry on her part of the war. Russian industry west of the Volga had been almost obliterated. American had not been spared: by V-J Day in the Pacific, 322, 188 of her youth had been lost in battle or had died in the service and approximately 700,000 had been wounded. "Crusade in Europe" provides an intimate look at World history. With a big smile, warm manner, sincerity, and integrity, Eisenhower had irresistible charisma, charming everyone who met him, from ordinary soldiers to world leaders. Stephen Ambrose, professor of history at the University of New Orleans, wrote: "Dwight Eisenhower was a great and good man," and even "Ike's" harshest critics agreed. He was a heroic figure, immensely popular and admired throughout the world. Ike had none of Patton's flare, nothing of Field Marshall Montgomery's flamboyance, little of De Gaulle's imposing personality; but he had a rare talent for managing people, a genius for planning, and a successful long-term objective. "Crusade in Europe" is a brilliant and unusual because Eisenhower was a commanding officer, and he wrote it himself---without ghost writers. It's a soldier's personal narrative as naturally told and moving as a letter from a foxhole. Eisenhower offers private opinions of, and personal experiences of Patton, Montgomery, Bradley, Marshall, MacArthur, and Roosevelt. On D- Day when the Allies invaded Hitler's Europe, Eisenhower controlled nearly three million troops, over 10,000 aircraft, and more than 6,00 sea-going vessels. Neither Napoleon nor Alexander the Great ever led any army of that size or power. Later Dwight Eisenhower became the 34th President of the U.S., 1953-1961. 559 pages, including an Index. Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
