He graduated from YALE University and with his 'Yalie' friend, BRITON HADDEN, founded TIME magazine in 1923 and in 1930, he started another periodical, FORTUNE. Luce also published LIFE magazine. The first issue of Luce's SPORTS ILLUSTRATED was published in 1954. Luce always favored CHINA and was an ardent opponent of COMMUNISM and the RUSSIAN EMPIRE. Conservative, he used his periodical to endorse conservative candidates for public office. Luce was a staunch Calvinist, a True Believer in God, country and Yale. Some of Henry Luce's favorites included CHINANG KAI-SHEK and his wife, Madame Chiang, and authors THEODORE WHITE and JOHN HERSEY. Luce championed the cause of American world domination, and was confident that the nation would be best governed by a business aristocracy. Luce intensely disliked FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT and used his periodicals to endorse his opponents. Winston Churchill called Luce one of the seven most influential men of the 20th century. Luce's second wife was CLARA BOOTH BROKAW, a beauty, who became an ambassador to ITALY and BRAZIL and was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate from the state of CONNECTICUT. Henry Luce was a "shaker and mover" and was known around the world, having visited with HARRY TRUMAN, FDR, CHURCHILL, DUKE and DUCHESS of WINDSOR, ESTES KEFAUVER, JOSEPH KENNEDY and his son, JOHN F. KENNEDY, DEAN RUSK, HIROHITO, REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM, LYNDON JOHNSON, STALIN, ADLAI STEVESON, GEORGE MARSHALL. Luce was especially fond of DWIGHT EISENHOWER, endorsing him for President. When Luce died, the New York Times said: "Every third U.S. family buys every week a Luce-product. 94 percent of all Americans over 12 know TIME." 529 pages, including Notes and an index. Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
