Description

Easton Press leather edition of Robert J. Rayback's "Millard Fillmore: Biography of a President," a COLLECTOR'S edition, one of the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1959. Bound in hunter green leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, gold gilding on top edge only---in FINE condition. COLLECTOR'S NOTES included. Millard Fillmore, who lived from 1800-1874, was the 13th President of the U.S., 1850-1853. He was born in Western New York. His father apprenticed his fourteen-year-old son to a cloth-dresser where he grew to manhood. In 1819, he courted Abigail Powers, daughter of a local judge. Eventually, Fillmore studied law but in 1822, he took a teaching position and then moved to Buffalo. In 1858 after the death of Abigail, Fillmore married Caroline McIntosh, a wealthy widow and by marriage contract she turned over to him a handsome estate. In later years, she became an invalid. As Vice President under Zachary Taylor, Fillmore presided with scrupulous fairness over the stormy debates centering on slavery compromise measures. When Taylor died, Fillmore chose to compromise to preserve the Union---despite his personal abhorrence of slavery. He chose DANIEL WEBSTER as Secretary of State in an effort to steer the Ship of State on a course of moderation. Fillmore worked with HENRY CLAY, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, THURLOW WEED and JOHN C. CALHOUN. Although he was a "strikingly handsome man," Fillmore has often been labeled as "bland" and "colorless." As President, Fillmore sent Matthew Perry to open Japan to trade. Julius Pratt of the University of Buffalo said that "without Fillmore there could have been no Lincoln." Fillmore made a political mistake when he agreed to run on the KNOW NOTHING ticket in 1856. When Fillmore retired he returned to Buffalo and led an active life, working with the medical college, the Historical Society, and serving as the University of Buffalo chancellor. 470 pages, including an Index. Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.

Quite the surprised, at first I thought I ordered something from a pet shop because of the box turns out to be my order xD. My books were well packaged no noticeable box damage internally and externally. They were as described in the listing and shipped promptly in a 2 weeks window. Would recommend seller.
