Easton Press leather edition of Douglas Southall Freeman's "Washington: An Abridgment in one Volume of the original Seven" by RICHARD HARWELL, one of the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1985. Bound in camel tan leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, gold gilding on top edge only---in near FINE condition. George Washington, who lived from 1732---1799, was born on a plantation on the Potomac River in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He served as President of the U.S. from 1789-1797. His father died in 1743, leaving an estate of 10,000 acres and 50 slaves. The largest portion was bequeathed to George's brother, Lawrence. Washington became a surveyor in 1749 and with his money he began purchasing land, including 1,459 acres in the Shenandoah Valley in 1750. In 1752, Lawrence died and left the bulk of his estate to his wife, Ann. George W was appointed an adjutant of militia with the rank of major. In 1759, he married MARTHA CUSTIS, a wealthy widow who owned thousands of acres and hundreds of slaves. In 1761, he inherited MOUNT VERNON after the death of his sister in law, Ann. GW was involved in the French and Indian War and was later chosen as one of seven Virginia delegates to the Second Continental Congress in 1775 and ultimately the leader during the REVOLUTIONARY WAR. This volume includes his letters to Robert Dinwiddie, John Augustine Washington, Lund Washington, Benedict Arnold, Martha Washington, Joseph Reed, Alexander Hamilton, Marquis de Lafayette, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Bushrod Washington, his First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Six and Seventh Annual Messages to Congress, Address to the Cherokee Nation, his Proclamation Concerning the "Whiskey Rebellion," his First and Second Inaugural Address, his Farewell Address in May 1796, his Retirement, 1797-1799, and His Last Will and Testament. Douglas Southall Freeman was a native of Lynchburg, Virginia, and a graduate of Richmond College. He received his LL.D. at JOHNS HOPKINS in 1908. For the next thirty-five years he served as the Editor of the Richmond Free News. Dr. Harwell was chief librarian for several colleges and curator of rare books and manuscripts at the University of Georgia. 780 pages, including an Index. I offer Combined shipping.
