Description

Easton Press leather edition of Herbert S. Parmet's "Jack: The Struggles of John F. Kennedy," Volume one and "JFK: The Presidency of John F. Kennedy," Volume two, COLLECTOR'S editions, two of the volumes in the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1986. Bound in dark green leather, the books have marbled paper end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who lived from 1917 – 1963, served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. Volume one covers his childhood, teenage years, his education at Harvard, his years living in London when his father, JOSEPH KENNEDY was the Ambassador to the Court of St. James, his travels in Europe, his early "sexual" experiences, his Catholicism, his life in Hyannis Port, his courtship and marriage to JACQUELINE BOUVIER, his relationship with his children, Caroline and John Jr., his relationship with his mother, father, brothers, sisters, and close friends. JFK was "tall, dark, handsome," with a thick head of hair, a hairy chest, and a smile that attracted both men and women. After military service in the U.S. Naval Reserve in World War II, Kennedy represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representative from 1947 to 1953 as a Democrat. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Senate from that state from 1953 until 1960. Volume two covers Kennedy defeating Vice President and Republican candidate RICHARD NIXON in the 1960 U.S. Presidential Election. At age 43, he was the youngest man to have been elected to the office, and the first person born in the 20th century to serve as president; to date, he has been the only Roman Catholic president. A s President of the U.S., Kennedy dealt with the CUBAN MISSILE CRISES, the BAY OF PIGS INVASION, the NUCLEAR TEST BAN TREATY, the establishment of the PEACE CORPS, developments in the SPACE RACE, the building of the BERLIN WALL, the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, the "New Frontier" domestic program, and abolition of the federal death penalty in the District of Columbia. JFK's visits to Vienna, Paris and Berlin, the Alliance of Progress, and the Peace Corps were all steps in his foreign policy. Kennedy also avoided any significant increase in the American presence in Vietnam, refusing to commit combat troops and keeping the level of others, mostly military advisors, to only 16,000. Parmet discusses the 'strained' relationship that JFK had with Vice President LYNDON JOHNSON, his concerns about the 'secret tapes' that FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover had and 'subtly threatened' him with releasing. He also discusses the close relations that he shared with his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy and their involvement with MARTIN LUTHER KING and the Civil Rights movement. Parmet also covers the assassination in Dallas in November 1963. Much of the information is new, never before recorded and includes insights into EISENHOWER, STEVENSON, RICHARD NIXON, and ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. Vol. one has 586 pages and Volume two has 407 pages. Both volumes include Source Notes, Bibliography, and an Index. I offer Combined shipping.
