Description

Easton Press leather edition of Dumas Malone's "Thomas Jefferson the President, First Term, 1801-1805, Volume 4, a COLLECTOR'S edition, Illustrated with Period Photographs, Frontispiece Portrait of Jefferson by Rembrandt Peale, one of the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1993. Bound in deep burgundy leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, a satin book marker, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for a 'blank' attached bookplate on third page. Thomas Jefferson, who lived from 1743-1826, was the 3rd President of the U.S., 1801-1809. No other founding father had as powerful and as lasting an effect on the future of the new nation. Politician, poet, architect, philosopher, lawyer, farmer, philanthropist, scientist, inventor, writer---Jefferson was all of these things. Jefferson rose to fame as one of the most outspoken of the American revolutionaries. Jefferson was a prodigious and fascinating talent---a clever scientist and inventor and the foremost architect of his time. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, and an attorney who had studied with GEORGE WYETH, Jefferson secured a prominent place in history as the author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson served as Governor of Virginia, Vice President with JOHN ADAMS, and later as President of the U.S. He kept the young nation out of war and arranged the LOUISIANA PURCHASE, which doubled the territory of the U.S. He fought and won passage of a bill that nearly halved the sale price of government-owned lands, thus encouraging settlement of the West. Jefferson organized and helped plan the LEWIS and CLARK EXPEDITION of 1804. Jefferson married MARTHA WAYLES and they became parents to two daughters, Mary and Martha, who married THOMAS MANN RANDOLPH. Volume 4 is a detailed summary of Jefferson's first term as President with chapters entitled: "From Capitol Hill to the Presdent's House," "The Dreadful Burden of Appointments," "Peace and Economy," "The Jeffersonians and the Judiciary," "Politics and the Marbury Case," "The Religion of a Reasonable Man," "The Presiding Scientist," "The Mississippi Question," "Impending Crisis in the West," "The Louisian Treaty," "Torrent of Slander," "The Constitution and the Expanding Union," "Without Benefit of Protocol: the Merry Affair," "Judges on Trial," and "The Government and the New Citizen." Other personalities include: John Breckenridge, Refus King, John Quincy Adams, George Washington, Edward Thornton, Marques Yrujo, James Bayard, Marquis de Barbe-Margois, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Henry Dearborn, secretary of war; John Adams, Napoleon Bonaparte, Albert Gallatin, Andrew Jackson, his daughter, Maria Jefferson Eppes and Martha Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Paine, Levi Lincoln, attorney general; Robert Livingston, minister to France,; Benjamin Latrobe, surveyor of public buildings," and his sending MERRIWETHER LEWIS with Captain Clark on the 1804 Expedition to explore the region from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean. Malone discusses Merrill D. Peterson charge of the "miscegenation legend"---Jefferson's alleged sexual affair with SALLY HEMMINGS. Peterson concluded that the account was primarily "Federalist hatred," the institution of slavery and victims by the slave system, and certain factors in Jefferson's life, including the discreditable Walker affair and concludes that from "various sources" about Jefferson's slave and their life at Monticello we can learn a good deal about the Hemmings family." Dumas Malone was the longtime Chair of the Department of History at the University of Virginia and considered the "authority" on Thomas Jefferson. 539 pages, including an Index and Bibliography.
