Dan Irvin Rather, Jr. was born in 1931, the son of a Texas ditch digger "who worked with his hands and his heart." His dad never finished high school but was a voracious reader, especially newspapers. In 1950, Rather, a nineteen-year-old Texan, got his first break when he was hired as a reporter in Huntsville, Texas. Rather was married to Jean who grew up Winchester, Texas, and they are parents to four children. He is an American journalist, commentator, and former national evening news anchor. During HURRICANE CARLA in 1961, his reporting saved thousands of lives with the successful evacuation of 350,000 people. Rather later broadcast the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, 9/11, the Iraq War and the war on terror. He famously reported from Dallas in November 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He was promoted by CBS NEWS, where he served as the White House Correspondent beginning in 1964. This volume covers the years from 1997 forward. Rather comments on President BILL CLINTON, MALCOLM X, TIMOTHY McVEIGH, WANG DAN about TIANANMEN SQUARE in CHINA; YANG GUO FUNG in Hong Kong; Vice President AL GORE, AUDREY HEPBURN, JERRY CLOWER, the JONESBORO, ARKANSAS, school shooting in 1998, TEXAS GOVERNOR and later President of the U.S.: GEORGE W. BUSH, the death of PRINCESS DIANA in ENGLAND; Iraqi President SADDAM HUSSEIN. He served as foreign correspondent in London and Vietnam. He later covered the presidency of Richard Nixon, including Nixon's trip to China, the Watergate scandal, and the president's resignation in 1981. Rather wrote: For American Presidents, August is the "cruelest month." President and Mrs. John Kennedy lost a newborn in 1963; Lyndon Johnson's dreams of reversing his decision to drop out of the race for another term died with the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Richard Nixon was forced to resign in August, 1974. Bill Clinton was forced to become the first President in history to testify before a grand jury in a criminal case, but only the "most virulent Clinton-haters wanted him to leave office." Kenneth Starr despised Clinton; by August 1998, "the White House was in disarray, distrust and dismay." Rather anchored the CBS EVENING NEWS for 24 years until he was fired in 2007. Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS but the case was dismissed in 2010. Since 2018, Rather has been broadcasting on You Tube. "Deadlines and Datelines" displays Rather's distinctive gift for getting to the heart of the events and personalities that have formed our time." 220 pages. I offer combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
