Theodore Roosevelt, who lived from 1858-1919, served as the 26th President of the U.S., 1901-1909. T.R. was an American statesman, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer. "Teedie" was a precocious, inquisitive boy who wrote morose poetry and collected various forms of wildlife. He wa a tireless student of American history. His father was his idol and role model. A s a child, Theodore was sickly and pampered. During his frequent homebound and bedridden stints, he read. As he grew into adolescence, he discovered that rigorous outdoor activity curtailed the suffocating asthmatic episodes, and he developed an obsession with physical fitness and outdoor sports. Roosevelt is depicted on MOUNT RUSHMORE alongside fellow presidents GEORGE WASHINGTON, THOMAS JEFFERSON, and ABRAHAM LINCOLN. He integrated his exuberant personality, a vast range of interests and world-famous achievements into a "cowboy persona" defined by robust masculinity. An immensely popular figure, Roosevelt served as Vice President under WILLIAM McKINLEY, until an assassin's bullet mortally wounded McKinley in 1901. Theodore entered HARVARD in 1876 and upon completion, he was elected to the NEW YORK STATE Assembly in 1881 as a member of the Republican Party. In between sessions he spent time ranching in the DAKOTAS and went on extended big-game hunting expeditions. Roosevelt married ALICE LEE in 1878 and they became parents to a daughter, Anna. Alice died a couple of days after giving birth to Anna. Theodore then married EDITH CAROW in 1886 in LONDON. Theodore and Edith lived at OYSTER BAY, NEW YORK, with their five lively children. Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of Navy under McKinley. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Spanish-American War. His "Rough Riders" at the BATTLE OF SAN JUAN HILL were often exaggerated and over-dramatized over the years. Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York in 1899 and became the youngest man ever elected to the Presidency just a few weeks shy of his 43rd birthday. During his two terms as President, he championed the rights of 'the little man,' and made a war against 'malefactors of great wealth,' in his regulation of trusts. He supported such reforms as the MEAT INSPECTION ACT and PURE FOOD and DRUG ACT. Although Congress complained he had usurped its powers, he worked for the conservation of natural resources and greatly expanded the National Parks. He oversaw the construction of the PANAMA CANAL and adopted the 'big stick' policy giving the U.S. a sort of police power in Latin America affairs. He adopted an "open door" in China and mediated the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. He virtually dictated the nomination of TAFT in 1908, but was alienated by his successor's conservative policies and in 1912, Roosevelt formed the BULL MOOSE party, but his effort split the Republican Party and led to WOODROW WILSON's election. Following the defeat, TR led a two-year exhibition to the AMAZON basin where he nearly died of tropical disease. During World War I, he criticized President Wilson for keeping the U.S. out of the war with Germany. His offer to lead volunteers to France was rejected. He considered running for president again in 1920, but his health continued to decline and he died in 1919. Roosevelt is best remembered for expanding the powers of the presidency and of the federal government in support of the public interests in conflicts between big business and labor and for steering the nation toward an active role in world politics, particularly in Europe and Asia. He won the NOBEL PRIZE for PEACE in 1906 for mediating an end to the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), and he secured the route and began construction of the Panama Canal (1904-1914.) TR is generally ranked in polls of historians and political scientists as one of the five best presidents. Matthew Brander suggested that "Theodore Roosevelt, like Benjamin Franklin, was polygonal. He was interested in so many things, and regarding all of them had emphatic opinions." Henry Pringle wrote: "Roosevelt could be courageous and timid, honest and disingenuous. He could be moved by the highest considerations and, on occasion, by personal whims and jealousies. He was often kind, nearly always charming, and sometimes cruel." 455 pages, including an index--- a RARE title. I offer Combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
