William Shakespeare, who lived from 1564 – 1616, was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon." He wrote some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men. At age 49---around 1613--- he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Houseman wrote in the Foreword: "After the miseries of the Great Depression and World Wars I and 2, Shakespeare's plays were popular again and mankind was ready to accept Shakespeare's tragic view of the world in KING LEAR. "Coriolanus" has also been interpreted according to the changing political views and attitudes. For years Coriolanus and his mother were regarded as patriotic, heroic-figures and defenders of the Establishment. "Measure for Measure" deals with one of Shakespeare's favorite themes: the evils of EXCESS----excess of virtue, no less than excess of vice. . . The Stratford that William Shakespeare knew was still a medieval town. It had never been walled, which accounted for its unusually straight and broad streets. Stratford was run on a strict, paternalistic system. Shakespeare's mother, Mary, brought gentility to the marriage and more importantly: LAND. Religion was administered with a firm hand in Stratford, as it was everywhere in England. No play could be produced on the London stage until it had been certified that no seditious material had crept into it that might corrupt the susceptible public. "Macbeth" was written as a compliment to King James . . .who believed in witches; but unlike most normal people he was intelligent enough to know that some of their accusers were hysterics who faked their seizures. 395 pages, including a Selected Bibliography and an Index. Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
