Edith Newbold Jones Wharton, who lived from 1862-1937, was a member of a distinguished NEW YORK family and was privately educated in the U.S. and abroad. In the early 1920s, Wharton was the most renowned writer of fiction in America. She was one of the most intelligent American women and the first American woman to win a Pulitzer. Wharton divorced her husband, Teddy, when she learned that he was sexually unfaithful. During the fifteen months that followed the divorce (1913), she traveled in seven countries and three continents, telling her longtime friend, HENRY JAMES, that she felt liberated after 28 years of marriage. In a diary she kept spasmodically between 1924--1934, she remarked: "if I ever have a biographer, it is in these notes that he will find the gist of me." Her aim was to "gather together the floating scraps of experience that have lurked for years in corners of my mind. . ." 596 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
