Description

Franklin Library edition of John P. Marquand's "The Late George Apley," a Limited edition, one of the PULITZER PRIZE series, published in 1984. Bound in red leather, the book has marbled paper end leaves, hubbed spine, a satin book marker, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. John P. Marquand, who lived from 1893-1960, was born in Long Island, New York, but the family was forced to leave their gorgeous home overlooking L.I. Sound, their cook, lady's maid, nurse, waitress, coachman, gardener, and their horse, Prince, to become the poor relations at the old family estate in Newburyport, Massachusetts. His boyhood was spent in an atmosphere of affluence and privilege. Young Marquand's subsequent indigence and social ostracism---especially at HARVARD---which he attended in 1915 on scholarship and where he was excluded from the clubs---left a sense of deprivation he would spend a lifetime trying to counteract. "The Late George Apley: A Novel in the Form of a Memoir" was in fact a complexly constructed, subtly muted satire, and it marked the author's debut as a writer of serious fiction. Marquand married Christina Sedgwick in 1922---and she was from one of Massachusetts' most distinguished families. With a move to Boston's old-line Beacon Hill in 1927, Marquand joined the Brahmin lifestyle. 303 Pages. I offer combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.

Quite the surprised, at first I thought I ordered something from a pet shop because of the box turns out to be my order xD. My books were well packaged no noticeable box damage internally and externally. They were as described in the listing and shipped promptly in a 2 weeks window. Would recommend seller.
