Bound in red leather, the book has marbled paper end leaves and satin book marker----in near FINE condition. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who lived from 1835 – 1910, and better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and WILLIAM FAULKNER called him "the father of American Literature." Ernest Hemingway said "all American literature begins with Huck Finn." His novels "Tom Sawyer" and "Huck Finn" have often been called the "Great American Novels." Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, the setting for many of his novels. Twain was a handsome man with a thick head of hair, broad shoulders, and a thick hairy chest. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clements . He later became a riverboat pilot on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining as his motive for turning to writing. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures but invested in ventures that lost most of it and he eventually filed for bankruptcy. He eventually paid all his creditors in full, even though his bankruptcy relieved him of having to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Hailey' Comet , and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth. Twain married the heiress OLIVA LANGDON and enjoyed socializing with the rich in Connecticut and was a conspicuous member of the post-Civil War money-oriented society. He and Livy were parents to three daughters: Suzy, Clara, and Jean and a son, Langdon, who died when he was 19 months old. Twain was even willing, for Livy's sake, to wear a flower in his buttonhole, indoors if not on the street. Their days were punctuated at regular intervals by prayers, Bible readings, and grace before meals. "After all, what does tobacco matter? he joked. "Let's have another chapter of Deuteronomy." Twain built a mansion in HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, where he entertained royally---along with his next door neighbor, HARRIET BEECHER STOWE. Olivia Langdon became a great critic of Twain's work and often served as "censor." Kaplan focuses on Clemens' mature literary life, explores the "created identity called Mark Twain," an analyzes the gap between the man and his mask. Twain wrote novels, short stories, travel books, essays, plays, humorous sketches and "blunt observations on the "damned human race." Twain was awarded honorary doctorates by both OXFORD and CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITIES. Kaplan was born in New York City and graduated from HARVARD in 1945. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the National Book Award in 1967. 424 pages, including an index. I offer combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
