Title: Scripture Biography for the Young, with Critical Illustrations and Practical Remarks: Life Moses, Parts 1 and 2. Author: Thomas H. Gallaudet Series: Scripture Biography for the Young, Vols. 3 & 4, issued together as Vol. 26 of The Christian Library series. Publisher: The American Tract Society, New York. Publication Date: 1839 Format: hardcover; full leather; gilt lettering and bands on spine Length: 214 pages (Part 1); 268 pages (Part 2) Size: approximately 3 7/8" by 6" Illustrations: 5 wood engravings by Joseph A. Adams, including 2 frontispieces. Although not signed, it is known that Adams produced engravings for 3 of Gallaudet's Scripture Biography for the Young (including Life of Moses). Adams is best known for his 1600 engraved illustrations that appeared in Harper's Illuminated and New Pictorial Bible. Description: Rare edition of Gallaudet's two volume biography of Moses bound as a single volume in the American Tract Society's Christian Library series. Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was an educational philanthropist and founder of the first American school for the deaf. After graduating from Yale College in 1805, Gallaudet studied theology at Andover. His interests soon turned to the education of the deaf and in 1816, he and Laurent Clerc established the American Asylum for Deaf-mutes at Hartford, Connecticut. Gallaudet retired from the school in 1830, later receiving an appointment to the first professorship in the United States for the philosophy of education at New York University (1832–33). He also wrote textbooks for children and the deaf. These works included his Scripture Biography for the Young series. Between 1834 and 1843 he published 7 books in this series for the American Tract Society. Provenance: Bookplate on the inside front cover identifies this book as having originally been part of the Wesley Chapel Parsonage Library. The archives of the Laws of Maryland record the passage on February 13, 1847 of "an act to incorporate the Wesley Chapel Parsonage Library Association in the City of Baltimore." Condition: The binding is sound. The cover shows wear, including rubbing, bumping, bug damage, and some weakness in the leather at the hinges. There is a number pasted on the spine. Bookplate and writing on inside front cover. Pages are toned and have light to moderate foxing. Page edges are also foxed. One engraving (Map of Mt. Sinai) appears to be bound in upside-down. The pages are free of bug damage.
