Description
GREAT MEN AND FAMOUS WOMEN A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the Lives of More than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History Volume II Statesmen and Sages edited by Charles F. Horne Published: Selmar Hess, Publisher, New York - 1894, First Edition This hardcover book measures 9 1/2" X 11 3/4" - 408 pages, with B&W text illustrations, plus 15 B&W photogravures, and 35 B&W plates. This volume is one of what appears to be a four-volume set. We believe this set is a First Edition, First Printing of Great Men and Famous Women, dated 1894. In attempting to ascertain a value on Bookfinder we found these books were in the listings mixed with a cheaper and of less quality eight-volume set from the same publisher. Oddly enough we have (had) volumes 1-4 of this set in our inventory. They are also dated 1894, with no mention of the originals. There appears to be NO distinction between the two on Bookfinder. You will notice we designated the lesser quality four volumes as a Later Edition. Apparently at some point the quality four-volume set was broken into eight parts by the publisher. These inferior versions of the originals lack the gilt edged pages, the quality leather spines and corners, fine end papers, and are printed on stock of a lesser quality. We are offering these four quality original volumes not as a set since some people might have one or more in their libraries. We can always sell all four together to an interested party. What is also of note are the slipcases (see image) on volumes 2, 3 & 4 which have kept the conditions of these volumes in Near Fine over the years. The book is half leather bound, with gold inlay on the front and spine, and all the page edges gilted. There is some minor wear to the corners and some edges, with the book remaining in Very Good Plus condition or better. Free U. S. Media S&H. Parcel post and priority mail available upon request at an additional cost. Combined S&H available. International S&H higher. Please E-mail us with any questions. Thanks for looking!

Fritz Eichenberg's book Works of Mercy is in a category by itself, simply one of the most moving and beautiful books. I wanted to give it to a friend. The book arrived yesterday, I was stunned - it was in "Like New Condition." Never have I seen a more carefully packaged book, I can't express how much I appreciate the extra work the seller went to to protect this special book in mailing. The price was great, the book even better than described! Many, many thanks, Denise P. AAAAAA++++++++
