And The Lives of the Prominent Saints by the Rev. Alban Butler. A New and Revised Edition, published in 1876 by Thomas Kelly, New York. The first part of the book is 524 pages long and the second part is 335 pages. Large (9 X 12 X 2.5 in.) hardcover in 3/4 leather -- leather spine (with five bands) and board corners -- and blue-green buckram boards. 4 blank "Family Register" pages (one each for Marriages, Deaths, Births and Memoranda). A color frontispiece ("Daily Remembrance"), and 30 full page, black and white plates, including one of the title pages, plus other, smaller, black and white illustrations inside. All but two of the plates have a tissue guard. Endpapers are decorated in a floral pattern. Includes separate sections on the "Historical Calendar of Feasts of the Blessed Virgin," "Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary," and "Meditations on the Litany of the Most Blessed Virgin," plus the Lives of the Principal Saints (Bridget, Mary of Egypt, Bridget, Teresa, Margaret, Martha, Mary Magdalen, Elizabeth, Catherine, Cecily, Patrick, Helen, Jane de Chantal, Julia, Laurence, Francis Xavier, Ignatius, Augustine, Mark, et al.) Good condition. Complete, unmarked, securely bound. Two leaves (page 23/24 & page 321/322) were loose and glued back to the binding -- their edges are somewhat worn, but text is unaffected. The binding was repaired in a couple of other places, too, with good results, but some of the pages (especially the first 40) are a little uneven with the rest of the textblock. Occasional page corner bends, occasional foxing stains (from newspaper clippings, since removed, and on many of the plates and tissue guards). One of the black and white plates has a crease along the binding. The leather exterior is rubbed/scuffed in places (two board corners are rubbed through) but the leather is still very much intact and shedding very little (it was also treated with a preservative oil). The tissue guards are variably wrinkled. A program for a play ("Charlie's Wives") held at the Guardian Angels Auditorium in 1935 is enclosed. Free shipping in the USA. Thank you for looking!
