Description
I can't tell a lie, Pa; you know I can't tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet. Here we offer Mason Locke Weems's complete and delightful Life of George Washington; with Curious Anecdotes, Equally Honorable to Himself, and Exemplary to his Young Countrymen , published by Joseph Allen, Philadelphia, in 1834. This book is notable as it is the original source of the iconic American "Chopping down the cherry tree" story. The book was first published in 1800, but the cherry tree story was added in an 1806 edition. This edition features six engravings, including a frontispiece of Washington. It is bound in leather with a leather spine label. Well worn boards with cracked and repaired spine (please see pics). Intact endpapers bear period writing. Foxing throughout. Binding is very tight and square; text pages and engravings are very clean, bright and crisp. 228 pages, measures approximately 4.5 x 7-inches. The book arrived quickly and well-packaged with thoughtful touches - a wrapping sticker and a bookmark based on the book. The book is in beautiful condition, better than I expected from the description and pictures, and better than the same edition for similar prices from other sellers. A wonderful, professional seller.
