Description
This was quite the work with 532 pages and well over twenty beautiful engravings as one can see from the photos. Published in 1811, I believe this was before acid paper was invented and before lithography came into common use. It is quite easy to read which surprises me for some reason. James Stratford, the publisher was known for "part-works" which enabled large and expensive books to be purchased in installments and bound later. It appears that this was one of those publications. There are sections of pages that have slightly different color as compared to other sections. There is also a list of subscribers to the work. According to Wikipedia, these works often included high quality copper plate engravings from original works by notable artists.....I believe that is the case with this work which has beautiful plates as well as instructions to the binder as to where the plates are to be inserted. Sadly, James Stratford declared bankruptcy in 1813. He was sent to Fleet Prison and was still held there as a debtor as of November 1816. Thank you for your interest.
