Memoirs of Augustus Toplady Augustus Montague Toplady (1740–1778) was an English Anglican cleric, hymn writer, and theologian best known for composing the hymn Rock of Ages . A staunch Calvinist, he was a vocal opponent of John Wesley’s Arminian theology, engaging in heated theological debates throughout his short life. Born on 4 November 1740 in Farnham, Surrey, Toplady was the son of Richard Toplady, a British Army officer who died of yellow fever at the Battle of Cartagena in 1741. Raised by his mother, Catherine, Augustus was educated at Westminster School before studying at Trinity College, Dublin. It was in Ireland that he experienced a strong religious conversion, reportedly influenced by a sermon he heard from a Methodist preacher in a barn. Despite this Methodist connection, he later aligned himself firmly with Calvinist doctrine, becoming a strong proponent of predestination and divine grace. Ordained in the Church of England in 1762, he served as a curate in Devon and later became vicar of Broadhembury, a rural parish where he remained for much of his ministry. He was a gifted preacher, known for his intellectual rigour and polemical style, frequently writing pamphlets and essays defending Reformed theology against what he saw as the errors of Arminianism. His theological disputes with John Wesley were particularly fierce, with both men exchanging sharp critiques in print. Toplady is best remembered for his hymns, the most famous being Rock of Ages, first published in 1776. Legend has it that he wrote the hymn while taking shelter from a storm in a cleft of a rock in Burrington Combe, Somerset, though this story is likely apocryphal. His other hymns include A Debtor to Mercy Alone and Object of My First Desire , many of which reflect his deep conviction in divine grace and salvation through Christ alone. Plagued by ill health for much of his life, Toplady suffered from tuberculosis and died on 11 August 1778, aged only 37. In his final months, despite his frailty, he continued to defend his theological beliefs and expressed confidence in his salvation. Though he was a divisive figure in his time, his hymns have endured, securing his legacy in Christian hymnody. This is the Third Edition, published by W. Row, London, 1826. Book Condition Ratings As a reputable online bookseller, I adhere to the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA) guidelines for describing book conditions. Below is an explanation of each rating: MINT (M): A flawless, unread book in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. (Note: Very few ‘new’ books qualify for this grade, as minor rubs, scuffs, or bumped corners often occur during shipping or shelving.) FINE (F): Nearly perfect but may show slight signs of careful reading. The dust jacket may have very minor rubbing or slight bumping at the spine ends. NEAR FINE (NF): Approaches Fine but may have a couple of minor defects or faults. VERY GOOD (VG): A used book showing some signs of wear on the binding or dust jacket. Any defects or faults will be noted. GOOD (G): An average used and worn book with all pages intact. Any defects will be specified. FAIR: A worn book with complete text pages (including maps or plates, if applicable) but possibly missing endpapers, half-title pages, etc. (all of which will be noted). The binding or dust jacket may also show significant wear. POOR / READING COPY: A heavily worn book where its primary value is the complete and legible text. It may have loose pages, soiling, staining, or significant damage. Any missing maps or plates will be noted. EX-LIBRARY: Always designated as such, regardless of condition. BOOK CLUB: Always noted as such, regardless of condition. BINDING COPY: A book with complete text pages but a damaged, loose, or missing binding. Additional Notes: If a book was originally issued with a dust jacket or slipcase, its absence will always be noted in the listing. Any significant flaws, such as inscriptions, underlining, or marginalia, will be mentioned in the description. >>>>>> EXPERIENCED & TRUSTED SELLER <<<>>> STRONG PROTECTIVE PACKAGING USED < <<>>> DESPATCH WITHIN 24 HOURS <<<<<
