Frederick Olmsted was a journalist when he made his journey through Texas. Tasked with covering the state of slavery during the quiet years before the Civil War, he took copious notes about the people, places, and cultures of the Texas of his day. These notes, in the form of a journal, would become his seminal work, Olmsted’s Texas Journey . In Olmsted’s Texas Journey , the reader gets to travel back in time and witness Texas as it once was, and see how today’s Texas, with its variety of peoples and traditions, still shares a deep connection to the richness of its past. But his great Texas journey was in fact so much more. As he made his way to that great state, he took copious and wonderful notes of all the others he passed through. From Maryland to California, and Ohio to Louisiana, Olmsted’s great history chronicles every detail that he observed. This truly is a classic piece of American literature. ON THE BOARDER WITH CROOK BY JOHN G BOURKE ; From 1870 until 1886 Captain John O. Bourke served on the staff of General George Crook, who Sherman described as the greatest Indian fighter the army ever had, a man whose prowess was demon-strated "from British America to Mexico, from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean." But On the Border with Crook is far more than a first-hand account of Crook's campaigns during the Plains Indian wars and in the Southwest. Alert, curious, and perceptive, Bourke brings to life the whole frontier scene. In crisp descriptions and telling anecdotes he recreates the events and landscapes through which he moved; he sketches sharp action-pictures not only of Crook and his fellow cavalrymen but also of such great leaders as Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Geronimo. Perhaps most important, Bourke shows us how General Crook was able to achieve his most remarkable victory—how this man of war won and deserved the trust of the tribes he had subjugated. LIFE ON THE PLAINS AND AT THE DIGGINGS BY A DELANO ; Two kinds of illness set Alonzo Delano on the path to California in 1849: a bodily sickness that his doctor said would improve in the West...and GOLD FEVER. In one of the most fascinating pioneer accounts of the "mistakes and sufferings of the emigrants" as well as interactions with Native Americans, Delano left a highly detailed, fast-paced account of his trip across the plains and his time in the California gold rush. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Delano evinces a sympathy for the plight of Native Americans of his time and frustration with the white settlers' inability to see what was happening to an entire people in the West. Nevertheless, more than once he was armed and ready to confront approaching bands of Indians. Equally fascinating is Delano's descriptions of early California, the rough and tumble world of prospecting, and the lawless life in frontier towns. He made a successful life there after his mining expeditions and stayed for the rest of his days. RANCH LIFE AND THE HUNTING TRAIL BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT ; Before he ascended to the highest office in the land as the United States’ youngest president, Theodore Roosevelt, with illustrations by Frederic Remington, though a New York City man born and bred, was a devotee of the Old West. In 1888, he published this charming ode to the American frontier, from the rewarding hard work of a rancher on the open plains to the pleasures of hunting the big game of mountains high. Today, the inimitable prose and infectious enthusiasm of Roosevelt’s writing here serves as much to limn a unique aspect of the character of the nation as it sings an elegy for a disappearing way of life. Includes numerous illustrations by Frederic Remington. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Roosevelt’s Letters to His Children, A Book-Lover’s Holidays in the Open, America and the World War, Through the Brazilian Wilderness and Papers on Natural History, The Strenuous Life: Essays and Addresses, and Historic Towns: New York Politician and soldier, naturalist and historian, American icon THEODORE ROOSEVELT, (1858–1919) was 26th President of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909, and the first American to win a Nobel Prize, in 1906, when he was awarded the Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War. He is the author of 35 books

I am so very pleased with this old vintage magazine. It was exactly as described, and arrived in good condition since it was packaged well. It shipped in good time, and was priced fairly. I feel the seller did an outstanding job. It took a little longer to get to me as USPS caused a delay in delivery. No fault of seller.

Arrived as promised, wrapped with clear wrap, protected with cardboard front and back, inside a padded envelope! Couldn't find this title anywhere else with large print. Price was better than expected and condition was as advertised or better. Very pleased with this offer and seller!
