Provenance: This set was originally part of the collection of Alexander Hendras Sutherland. Alexander Hendras Sutherland (1753–1820) was a wealthy merchant who devoted his considerable fortune to forming a remarkable collection of prints and drawings illustrative of the history of England in the seventeenth century, which he used to grangerize a number of titles, notably Clarendon's 'History of the Rebellion'. His widow presented the collection to the University of Oxford in 1837. This First Edition of the Langhorne translation of Plutarch's Lives with frontispiece to each volume. Published and Printed for Edward and Charles Dilly in the Poultry, London. 8vo. Original leather boards. Full calf. Cracking to spine/spine wear. Wear to boards. All front covers and first blank matter page are detached with the exception of volume IV, which is attached. See photos for condition. Light foxing here and there but most pages in good condition with no damage. Good binding otherwise. Volume VI includes index and errata. A fine addition to any antiquarian library.
