Spine is stamped in gold foil with titling and the coat of arms of the Royal Order of the Garter. * Size 8.5" x 10.5" * Pages: Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Mr. Gray.: pp 1-416; The Poems of Mr. Gray pp 1-110. Total: 526 pages. * Engraved frontispiece portrait. * Luxurious hand-laid watermarked paper * It is believed that this volume was in the former collection of the Earls and Marquesses of Huntly, which was the premier noble house of Scotland. The book bears markings of the ducal library at Castle Gordon on the inside left cover sheet (see detail photo). Condition Used - Moderate to heavy foxing to front matter (tp, Some scattered very light and inoffensive foxing; joints cracked but cords still holding strong; cover boards rubbed at edges. As seen in the image, the covers are well worn, interior cover sheets cracked at the hinges but binding holding well. Internally some foxing to beginning & endpapers, bleeding from frontis to title page, but generally very fresh. Very modest repairs to front and rear cover sheets. Additional information & images on request. Remarks Thomas Gray (1716 – 1771) was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar, and fellow at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He is widely known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard , published in 1751. Gray was a self-critical writer who published only 13 poems in his lifetime, despite being very popular. He was even offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1757 after the death of Colley Cibber, though he declined. [Wikipedia]
