Description

For auction is Benevenuto Cellini’s Autobiography, published by Black’s Readers Service Company, Roslyn, New York. This one volume English language version was translated by J Addington Symonds. Benevenuto Cellini was born on November 1, 1500 in Florence, now part of Italy. He died on February 13, 1571, also in Florence. He one historian noted, Cellini “was a Florentine sculptor, goldsmith, and writer. He was one of the most important Mannerist artists and, because of the lively account of himself and his period in his autobiography, one of the most picturesque figures of the Renaissance.” He worked for the Bishop of Salamanca and Pope Clement VII. He is best known for his sculpture, the bronze Perseus in Florence’s Loggia dei Lanzi, and for a colossal bust of the Grand Duke of Tuscany (Bargello, Florence). One historian observed that Cellini’s lasting fame is due more to his autobiography than to his artistic works. The autobiography, reported dictated to a workshop assistant, was composed in colloquial language and provides a firsthand account of the Cellini’s experience in the Rome of Clement VII, the France of Francis I, and the Florence of Cosimo de’ Medici. The autobiography has been described as “a human document of surprising frankness and incomparable authenticity,” and Cellini’s “character is more intimately known than that of any other figure of his time.” According to the Introductory Note, Cellini was friends with Leonardo da Vinci, Titan and Michelangelo. This volume is in excellent and unread condition. The front and back covers are both in pristine condition and the page edges show no wear. This book comes with an attached ribbon bookmark. The book was printed and bound in the United States of America. The photographs of the book are the actual book itself, not stock photographs.
