KEYWORDS: President, United States, Easton Library, Abraham Lincoln, 16th President, America, 1800s, 19th Century, Biography, History, Government, Politics, Assassination DESCRIPTION: From the Collector's Notes: Abraham Lincoln sadly presided over a domestic war that split the Union and rocked its social and industrial foundations. In so doing, he wielded powers unprecedented in this nation's history; yet, he never abandoned his fervent belief in democratic self-government. An honest leader as well as a skilled politician, Lincoln always appealed to the intelligence of the electorate rather than to the ignorance of the masses. His assassination five days after Appomattox was a tragic misfortune to victor and vanquished alike, and one of the most searing episodes in the chronicles of the United States. It took fellow-midwesterner, Carl Sandburg, to write the definitive Lincoln biography. Sandburg's epochal work, a classic of American Literature, was deservedly awarded the coveted Pulitzer Prize. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, thirteen years after Lincoln's death, Sandburg was still in his twenties when he resolved to create a pen portrait of Lincoln the country lawyer and politician. It materialized in 1928 as a two-volume work, Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years. By then, he relates, "Lincoln the Man had grown on me so that I went on to write The War Years," a four-volume sequel, which was published in 1939. But having devoted a great part of his life to the painstaking research, documentation, and composition of the six-volume Lincoln biography, Sandburg could not rest until he had produced a more accessible version. With that in mind, over the next fifteen years, he gathered any new material that might throw light on the president's life and personality. When the present one-volume edition emerged in 1954 it was hailed by the Saturday Review as superior to even the original monumental work, and as retaining the superb qualities that only Carl Sandburg could have given it. Sandburg died in 1967, at the age of eighty-nine, in Flat Rock, North Carolina, his home for several years. "He has created not so much a book as a man," said Commonwealth magazine. "He gives us a Lincoln figure," Mark Van Doren wrote in The N. Y. Herald Tribune, "that is unique and vast and — by some means we cannot measure — clear." The Library of the Presidents proudly presents the greatest historical biography of our time, complete with its more than one hundred illustrations, to which we have added a specially commissioned full-color frontispiece portrait. We have had the volume bound by expert craftsmen in fine-grained black leather and its spine stamped in 22kt gold. A traditional American binding design has been inlaid on front and back covers. The tough Mohawk Vellum endpapers have been printed with an all over halftone "Americana" pattern and a satin ribbon marker has been affixed to the spine. In every respect the book now has a format worthy of both the subject and the author. ********** This is the Easton Library of the Presidents reprints Sandburg's biography of the 16th President, first President of the now-defunct Republican party. For convenience, I have numbered the volumes in the Library of the Presidents series based on the order of the Presidencies; numbers do not reflect the order in which the volumes were originally released. This copy includes the original collector's notes, the custom bookplate has been filled in and applied, but with a little cut and paste work you can make it your own. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear to leather covers, mainly on the top and bottom edges. Some faint wear and mild foxing to the top and outside edge gilt, especially on top, the interior of each volume appears clean and unmarked. Accompanying documentation displays some ageing around the edges. A solid VG copy. FROM THE BOOKSELLER: Thank you for visiting the Dactyl Books eBay Store!
