Description
Rare and valuable edition of the Jefferson Bible, titled "The Life And Morals Of Jesus Of Nazareth" published by the Government Printing Office in 1904. When copies were distributed to Congress in 1905, it started a tradition which lasted for half a century. Each new Senator and Representative was given a copy at their swearing in ceremony with every new Congress. The little known volume contains every word contained in the "Life of Christ" as arranged by Thomas Jefferson. This was Jefferson's attempt to remove supernatural aspects of the Bible and to further clarify Jesus' doctrine. Henry S. Randall stated, "Thomas Jefferson's mission was leadership. Without an effort on his part, expressions from his lips, that from other men's would scarcely have attracted notice, became thenceforth axioms, creeds, and gathering-cries to great masses of his countrymen." Nice condition overall. The pages are in good condition as you can see from photos. The fold out map is still intact. The marbled page at the front has come loose. Inscription in front shows how the book was passed down in the Dabney family, avid collectors of antique books and documents. Size: 5.5" x 9" Priced at HALF of what it was marked!
