Description
The Life and Adventures of M A R T I N C H U Z Z L E W I T by Charles Dickens ________________________________ ABOUT THIS BOOK The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit - a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. Originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it, Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work thus far, but it was one of his least popular novels, judged by sales of the monthly instalments. Characters in this novel gained fame, including Pecksniff and Mrs Gamp. Like nearly all of Dickens novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were lower than those of previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. Dickens had visited America in 1842 in part as a failed attempt to get the US publishers to honour international copyright laws. He satirized the country as a place filled with self-promoting hucksters, eager to sell land sight unseen. In later editions, and in his second visit 24 years later to a much-changed US, he made clear it was satire and not a balanced image of the nation in a speech and then included that speech in all future editions. The main theme of the novel, according to Dickens' preface, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. Dickens introduced the first private detective character in this novel. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, a friend of Dickens. P l e a s e c h e c k p i c t u r e s a n d d o n ' t h e s i t a t e t o a s k i f y o u h a v e a n y q u e r i e s ! H107

I got the book wrapped up quite nicely. It was as described on the outer rims. I kept it wrapped up because it's a gift, so I couldn't check the actual pages. The seller at first forgot to pack the book and send it off, but notifying them about this got the issue resolved quickly with a lovely phone call. Overall a positive experience outside of some delayed postage and not *immediately* notifying me of this without prompting this seller to do that for me. I'll look to them for other rare books.

First edition of hard-to-get 1974 hard cover book "Shale Railways of New South Wales" by Gifford Eardley et al. Book is in new condition but with very slight rub marks on the dust cover at the top of the spine, now covered with a plastic full outer cover. Very well photographed and accurately described in the listing. Sent in a cardboard carton, well wrapped in bubblewrap in an Auspost mailing envelope by Express Post. A pleasure to deal with, hope to deal with, 5 Stars! Recommended,
