KEYWORDS: President, United States, Easton Library, Woodrow Wilson, 28rd President, America, 1900s, 20th Century, Biography, History, Government, Politics, DESCRIPTION: From the Collector's Notes: Volume I: Woodrow Wilson was the first non-clergy president of Princeton University, one of the few university presidents to be elected to the Presidency of the United States, and the second President to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Ironically, though re-elected as the man who "kept us out of war," he brought the United States into World War I in order to "make the world safe for democracy." Born in Staunton, Virginia, in 1856, Woodrow Wilson was the son of a Presbyterian minister whose high moral principles he espoused without reserve. He gave up his law practice to enter the Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins University, taught at Bryn Mawr College for three years, and, in 1890, was appointed professor of jurisprudence and political economy at Princeton, his alma mater. Wilson became president of Princeton in 1902. He was elected governor of New Jersey in 1910, and two years later was elected the first Democratic U.S. President in two decades. As a result of Woodrow Wilson's advocacy, the Federal Reserve System and the Federal Trade Commission were established, the Clayton Antitrust Act became law, and a Federal income tax was imposed for the first time since the Civil War. In the first volume of this biography, Arthur Walworth takes the reader through the first term of Wilson's administration. It was during this period that Mexico broke off relations with the United States. Provoked by hostile actions, the President had sent in the Marines to occupy the Vera Cruz custom-house, and ordered U.S. troops to enter Mexico in pursuit of the bandit-guerilla leader Pancho Villa. Walworth exhibits his deep sympathy with Woodrow Wilson's grief and loneliness occasioned by the death of the first Mrs. Wilson. Likewise, as the historian Alan Nevins remarked, Walworth displays "a subtle perception of Wilson's mind and character, a sense of the drama and color of his life, and a detached attitude in measuring his accomplishments and failures." "A clean and sprightly narrative," as The Yale Review characterized it, this biography "is particularly successful in catching the spirit of its subject, in revealing his passions and his fulfillments, his extraordinary capacity for love, for hate, for self-mastery, and for self-delusion." A definitive biography of Woodrow Wilson, Woodrew Wilson: American Prophet won the Pulitzer Prize for Arthur Walworth. The concluding volume, which will be distributed to subscribers next month, is devoted to the eventful last seven years of the President's life, including the period of America's triumphant participation in World War I. Volume II: Woodrow Wilson's second term, with which the concluding volume of Arthur Walworth's biography begins, was in many ways an ominous forecast of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's third term. Both Presidents had steered a neutral course during the beginning of global conflict. Both Presidents eventually found it incumbent upon themselves to involve America in those conflicts, to fight our enemies with every means that could be brought to bear, and to help bring about the final victory of the Allied powers. before completing their last terms. Both Wilson and Roosevelt, moreover, pinned their hopes for postwar peace on a worldwide organization, and though the United Nations actually materialized, Wilson tragically failed to effect American participation in a League of Nations that was doomed from its inception. Wilson's final seven years are vividly reconstructed in this, the second volume of the Pulitzer Prize biography of our twenty-eighth President. Here is a moving account of a Chief Executive struck down by an incapacitating illness while on a cross-country tour undertaken to urge ratification of the Treaty of Versailles. After a paralytic stroke suffered on October 2, 1919, and while being cared for by his second wife, Wilson continued to issue appeals for the treaty. Wilson remained an invalid during his last five years. "Arthur Walworth has written a biography of distinction... a book easy to read and essential to a broad appreciation of Wilson and his political era. The student of history will find it invaluable as an accurate and authoritative work of reference." Such was the endorsement of Charles Seymour, president emeritus of Yale University. Stewart Mitches, a former director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, called it a work of prime importance, one that shows "a sense of proportion, humor, accuracy, and tenderness." Born in Newton, Mass., in 1903, Walworth attended Phillips Andover Academy and Yale, and was a member of the editorial department of Houghton Mifflin Company for eight years. Besides the Wilson biography, published in 1958, his books include Black Ships off Japan: The Story of Commodore Perry's Expedition (1946), Cape Breton, Isle of Romance (1948), and American Diplomacy at the End of World War II (1977). Woodrow Wilson: World Prophet now joins Woodrow Wilson: American Prophet in The Library of the Presidents. Meticulously printed in Kingsport, Tennessee, at the Kingsport Press, on special Warren Olde Style wove paper, and bound by Kingsport in rich genuine leather, this volume matches the preceding one in its outstanding physical attributes and handsome appearance. ********** This is the Easton Library of the Presidents reprints Walworth's two-volume biography of the 28th President, originally published in 1978 by W. W. Norton & Company. For convenience, I have numbered these volumes based on the order of the Presidencies; numbers do not reflect the order in which the volumes were originally released. This set includes the original collector's notes and the unused original custom bookplate (Volume II only, see condition). CONDITION: Light shelf-wear to medium-brown leather covers. Some wear to the front cover gilt. Some faint wear and mild foxing to the top, bottom, and outside edge gilt, the interior of each volume appears clean and unmarked. Spines slightly cocked, but that should be reversible. Bookplate for Volume 1 has been used, but could probably be carefully repurposed or covered. Collector's Notes for both volumes are folded in half, due to the small size of the books. Accompanying documentation may display some ageing around the edges. A solid VG set.
